THE STORY

Building a stronger financial foundation with the staff already in place.

An educational nonprofit relied on one part-time accounting employee to manage its financial records. While the organization’s day-to-day bookkeeping was getting done, leadership did not have a formal process for receiving or reviewing financial information.

Warren Whitney joined the organization as a fractional CFO and Controller. We evaluated its accounting practices, improved reporting, introduced stronger financial controls, and helped leadership understand how financial results connected to budgeting and operational decisions.

The engagement also gave the organization ongoing senior-level financial oversight without requiring a full-time CFO.

The Situation

The nonprofit needed an experienced financial professional to determine whether its back-office accounting systems and procedures were working as intended.

The organization had limited internal accounting capacity. Financial information was not presented to leadership through a consistent reporting process, and the small accounting team needed guidance on procedures, documentation, restricted funds, and annual audit preparation.

Key needs included:
• An evaluation of current accounting and bookkeeping practices
• Formal monthly financial reporting
• Clear financial information for management and board committees
• Better tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds
• Stronger preparation for the annual external audit and Form 990
• Financial guidance for the organization’s accounting employee
• Help interpreting financial results and making budget decisions

Warren Whitney’s Role

Fractional CFO and Controller leadership with hands-on accounting oversight.

Warren Whitney served as the organization’s fractional CFO and Controller. We worked alongside the existing accounting employee while giving management, the finance committee, and the board access to experienced financial leadership.

Our role combined evaluation, implementation, reporting, review, and education. We did not simply recommend changes. We helped put the new procedures in place and continued reviewing the organization’s accounting data to ensure the improvements were maintained.
