THE STORY

A new leader. A new chapter. A plan to move forward together.

When an independent school appointed a new president, she and the board recognized an important opportunity: before moving forward, they needed to ensure they had a shared vision and clear agreement on goals and priorities.

Warren Whitney led a research-based strategic planning process that gave the school a broad, honest picture of where it stood and a practical roadmap for where it was headed.

The Situation

The school’s new president and board were aligned on the need for a strategic plan, but needed an experienced outside facilitator to lead the process objectively and ensure all voices were heard.

Key needs included:
• A research-based foundation for the planning process
• A broad SWOT analysis drawing from multiple stakeholder groups
• Facilitation of vision, mission, and core values review
• Development of goals, strategies, action steps, and timetables
• A final strategic plan document for use by leadership and the boardations

Warren Whitney’s Role

Research-based planning, led by an experienced outside facilitator.

Warren Whitney used a research-based approach as the foundation for the strategic planning process. That research provided a broad SWOT analysis, surfacing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and helped identify the issues that mattered most to different groups within the school community.

With that foundation in place, Warren Whitney led the strategic planning steering committee through a structured process: reviewing and revising the school’s vision, mission, and core values, then developing goals, strategies, action steps, and timetables.

The result was a final strategic plan document delivered to the school, one that became a working tool for the president and management team, and a regular part of board meeting discussions.
Five years later, the school returned to Warren Whitney to facilitate the next round of planning. Once the strategic plan was complete, Warren Whitney’s HR team conducted an HR assessment and helped implement its recommendations, work that reflects the broader range of HR support Warren Whitney provides, from leadership transitions to fractional HR Director services to day-to-day HR functions.
